Am heutigen Freitagabend besteht für Freiburger Verhältnisse beinahe ein Überangebot an Ausgehmöglichkeiten – sofern man bereit ist, über seinen doch sehr kleinen Tellerrand hinauszuschauen. DJ T im Jazzhaus, Super Flu auf dem Stinnes Areal, die Somebody Scream im Drifter’s, etc. Warm up im Drifter’s, Peak Time bei Herrn Koch und Nachbeben mit den Jungs von Monaberry. Hätte ich gemacht, wenn ich gerade den Teenager-Schuhen entwachsen wäre. Da ich aus diesen schon etwas länger draussen und obendrein ein Freund von festen Strukturen bin, wird mich mein Weg am Jazzhaus vorbei ins Drifter’s führen. Davor noch ein häusliches Warm Up, und dazu gibt’s den neuen Guest Mix. Eingespielt hat ihn ein DJ-Duo aus Manchester, Jagger and The Bat. Wer sich dahinter verbigt, was sie prägt, was sie machen, erfahrt ihr in den folgenden Zeilen:
1. Jagger and the Bat, would you like to introduce yourself?
We live in Manchester, playing at the Soup Kitchen when ever the opportunity arises and have recently taken up a residency for Arthouse. We’ve been going out and listening to electronic music (bad and good) for over 10 years and been playing together for about 3 of them, although it’s only really in the last 12 months that we’ve been doing that in public on a regular basis.

2. When did your initial music spark ignite?
Kris – I guess there was a musical spark between us at first sight, we were just sonically drawn together, you know? I think back to those times when we’d terrorise our neighbours with our all night sessions that would last for hours and I get all emotional. We had really strong and rather turbulent public opposition in those days but we stayed true to our beliefs and I’m happy to say we’re here to tell our story now.
Ben – I remember further back than that when Kris’ love for trance and my love for soulful house would clash like an expensive 70s suit, when we first met 10 years ago on the sweaty dance floor of Coalville’s Emporium. Things have gradually improved since then and, when we eventually took the “big step” and became flat mates and realised that when you play together you can get a fresh drink every other record, it all came together.
Kris – That’s not how I remember it…
3. Who and what is your most important influence?
Kris – ‘who’ could be an endless list whereas ‘what’ is definitely my mood on any given day. There is definitely a good community of people in Manchester that work hard to promote new or respected artists and DJ’s regardless of profits. Nights like meandyou. in Manchester, Acetate in Leeds and events like Freerotation have left the largest mark on me over the last year.
Ben – My time in Leeds has been a big influence on me; nights like Back to Basics and Mad Hatters brought me back into the world of electronic music and showed me a whole new side of house music that I didn’t really know about. Now I find small local nights like meandyou. and Cutloose (plus many others including bigger nights like fabric) that showcase what to me is the best music around.
4. How would you describe your own style?
Kris – It’s house music. There’s no other way to describe what we play. We definitely delve into different genres but that’s the main influence behind any set we do. Some of our friends call it elevator music…
Ben – I’m not sure I can put it any better. Kris tries to be clever and play techno but quite frankly I don’t stand for it.
5. Do you produce your own tracks and what are you currently working on?
Kris – Production just doesn’t come into it for me, at least, not right now. I’m basically just a collector that likes to share that music with others. I guess that’s what many other producers also do as DJ’s but this is what I want to focus on until I think I’ve gone as far as I can with this.
Ben – There’s too much fun to be had playing other people’s music for me at the moment and my motivation for trying to develop as a DJ far out weighs my ambition for producing music (for now).
6. What are your future plans?
Kris – Find more grooves and maybe make that transition from boy to man.
Ben – That and get more chicks. Chicks dig house music. Failing that we’ll just keep doing what we do, enjoying the music we love and playing out when ever we get the chance.
