Marlinspike a.k.a. Hot Coins a.k.a. Red Rack’em. Und auf geht’s:
Hi my name is Danny Berman. I am originally from Fife in Scotland but I now live in Nottingham, England. I am a DJ and music producer and I work under a few different names including Red Rack’em, Hot Coins and Marlinspike. I have released music on Untracked, Home Taping Is Killing Music, Undertones, Tirk, Autodiscoteque and Deep Freeze. I DJ out at least a couple of times a week and I produce and present my own radio show The Smugglers Inn which is hosted here – http://www.redrackem.com/ or search itunes store for ‘smugglers inn radio’.
2. When did your initial music spark ignite?
Well I have been involved in music since I was very young. I played drums and bass guitar in a few bands as a teenager. I was a massive fan of hip hop from about 1988 until 1998. I started DJing in 1994 when I still lived in my parents fishing village. Fast forward 2 years and I started producing dark drum and bass in Bristol in 1996 with my friends there. I think the big step for me was buying an Apple Mac in 2000 and starting to engineer my own tracks rather than work with other people. Around 2002 I started to take my tracks down to Funky Monkey the local record store and we would scrutinise them through the shops big speakers. In 2004 the guys at Funky Monkey encouraged me to start my own hip hop edit label called Red Rack’em and I ended up putting out 5 volumes of remixes. I got to work with some of the biggest names in hip hop – they just didn’t know about it 😉 Since then I have worked hard on improving as a producer and now I am making a wide variety of music including house, disco, techno and also a kind of 2 step garage/deep house hybrid.
3. Who are your most important influences?
Just good music – be it noise bands like Part Chimp, new wave stuff like Devo or Gary Numan, house from people like Pepe Bradock or Juju and Jordash or early 2 step by people like Zed Bias. The best way to hear my influences is to listen to my radio show or come and hear me DJ somewhere.
4. How would Hot Coins describe Red Rack’em? and how would Red Rack’em describe Hot Coins?
Hot Coins would describe Red Rack’em as a really drugged out eyes closed on the dancefloor 4am moment type of house and hip hop producer who listens to far too much 313 music.
Red Rack’em would describe Hot Coins as a trendy disco not disco punk funk new wave type of producer who listens to too many Baldelli mixes and spends too much time in East London. Hot Coins needs to start wearing tighter jeans and get some white vests.
I am trying to get through my 12″ singles workload and then focus on the Marlinspike and Hot Coins albums. Both are in pretty good shape to be honest – not far off on both of them. I have got loads of singles to come out between now and next spring on Untracked, Shift, Undertones and Home Taping Is Killing Music – so that should keep me in the shops for a while. The plan is to finish the Marlinspike album by early 2010 – and then focus on the Hot Coins album. I am sure there will be a few more twelves and remixes along the way too.
6. What are your future plans?
Albums. More DJ gigs abroad. Keep doing the radio shows. Keep progressing as an artist and DJ.
